does anyone know the stats on how many leave?
my mother told me that only 87,000 got baptized last year.
it seems to me that more would have left then that.

growing up as a jw in the 70's and 80's we didn't have the influence of the internet.
i, of course, believed i was in "the truth" and never heard anything (from the outside) that negative about our jw religion.
of course, now and again, we had some angry people at the door, but other than that i can't recall very many outside negative criticisms.
if you want to know about something (a religion) ...you need to go to the source....
That's great reasoning. So if I want to know the truth about heroin, should I go to a drug dealer, because he is the source of it?
when we were in the wts, they used to fire up our expectations over the slightest things, earthquakes being one of them.
how we used to latch on to these things very quickly, but if we read the scriptures it doesnt say .
in fact it says the opposite,.math 24 v 4..jesus said "look out that nobody misleads you".
I love how they try to claim every war or disaster as something they predicted. They are like some phony terrorist group that wants to be famous, and calls in a claim every time a bomb goes off - "That bomb in the marketplace - that was us, we're the Holy Self-Righteous Martyrs Brigades! That car bomb earlier this morning - that was us!"
Only with them, it's "That earthquake in Sumatra - that was us! We predicted that there would be earthquakes. That war in Iraq - that was us! We predicted there would be wars. That tsunami in Indonesia - well.... that was caused by an earthquake.... so... that was us! We called that one too!"
isee this mentioned alot here but haven't a clue what it is?
!can somebody put me out of my misery please?i keep thinking of plasters but that's band aid!thanks.
This thread jogged a memory for me. In typical WTS style, they decided to capitolize on this event by giving it its own Watchtower magazine, entitled "Are You Following God, or a Man?" It had a picture of the scene at the compound. I must have been a pretty cynical kid, becuase I remember that during the WT study I drew a little Kool-Aid man walking off through the trees singing "Oh Yeah" (from the Kool-Aid commercial at the time).
I was 14 then. It seemed pretty funny to do that at the time. It seems insensitive now.
i understand that a jw elder in western australia defected to the sda.. have there been other cases of elfers defecting to other religious groups.
?.
Yeah, I don't know much about the SDAs, but that didn't sound like a lot of progress to me.
I don't think I would do it. I'm too much of a carnivore
the april 15, 2007 watchtower revolves around the congregation, it's benefits and requirements.. the second study article is let the congregation be built up.
under the subheading sticking with the congregation the society acknowledges those who cannot accept a certain teaching even after doing research in their publications.. .
para 14 consider another possibility involving the congregation.
At times, an elder may not do things as directed by the faithful slave class and its Governing Body. If he continues acting this way, he will have to render an accountto Jehovah
Truthseeker, I understand your point on this, but I would like to point out something from a different angle, if I may. Sure, there are bad elders out there. And some of them are just wing nuts. But the irony to me is that in my experience, the local level is where you find the brothers who seem to know what they are doing. Who have the most compassion, and can make descisions based on life experience in the real world. Sometimes what you need is for them to NOT do things as dictated by New York, where those making the descisions surround themselves only with people who will parrot back everything they say. As I have said before, when I was out at the edge, dealing with only local elders, the org almost made sense. I thought it would get clearer as I migrated towards the center, but it got worse. I was not a bethelite, but I think the experiences posted here by many ex-bethelites validate this feeling.

The individual might go off on his own or be associating with just a few others, but where is thearrangement for congregation elders and ministerial servants?
In other words WTS, where is the platform for your authority, for your mastery over our faith?
It's GONE, and that's how it SHOULD BE!
as i mention before i was going to move to califorina when i left bethel, to get way from debbie's parents.
so i thought the best thing to do was to go to the service department and ask them were they "needed help" in the bay area of northern califorina.........this shows you how totally delusional i really was at the time.........i thought i could still "help" others, by moving to area that needed help.......yea right!........
just what a conergation needed another "burned out" exbethelite.
I just got a call from my son and daughter.........It seems their mother, my exwife Debbie of 27 years just got engaged to Jay XXXXXX from Oregon
Oooh, that sounds like a tough one, Newboy. I don't really have anything in my personal experience that is similar, so I don't really have any idea how I would react. I hope you are doing ok.
But to me, you will always be "Rocket Man"! Sensing the futility of a situation, but keeping a good sense of humor, and doing the best you can under the circumstances.
in a move to "democratize education" many top universities are now publishing class information online.
content can range from lecture notes to audio and video of lectures, assignments, and practice exams.
the article i read was called "yale for $0 a day" and originally appeared in the wall street journal.
r's hubby (MIL, as I recall ),
Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm glad you share my entusiasm for this. Our local university does some distance learning on a couple of cable channels. I have enjoyed watching the lectures on math and economics, just purely out of interest in the subjects. But when I saw this I thought - are you kidding me? I can just browse to an Ivy League school and pull lectures down? That's just amazing to me. I was blown away.
last night i got a text message from an old witness friend of mine inviting me to her wedding ceremony at the kingdom hall.
i was disfellowshipped about a month ago but obviously word hasnt gotton far enough around...or has it and she's inviting me anyway???
is there anything saying i can't?
Well, I don't think she has heard the news, sorry to say. I know d/f'd family members have been able to attend the wedding at the Kingdom Hall, but I don't know if that would apply to a friend. And the usual rules apply - no talking to anyone. And no going to the reception, either.
Sorry, I don't think it's right, but those are their rules.
